Thesis, Professional Project, and Comprehensive Exams Track
We want to help you customize your master's in communication degree curriculum so you get the most out of your time here at UL Lafayette. You can choose between completing a thesis or a professional project, or taking five comprehensive exams. If you're not sure which track to choose, talk to your graduate faculty members, and they'll help you create a path that best fits your ambitions and interests.
Thesis Track
Thesis track is a 30-credit hour program that can be completed in as little as four semesters. It consists of 24 credit hours (eight courses) of coursework plus a six-hour thesis component. In the thesis track, you will conduct scholarly research on a topic in your field that is selected in consultation with your committee.

Professional Project Track
The professional project track is a 36-credit hour program that can be completed in as little as four semesters. It consists of 30 credit hours (10 courses) of coursework plus a six-hour professional project component. If you choose the professional project track, you will perform more practical research, producing a project such as—but not limited to—advertising or PR campaigns, documentary videos, or corporate and organizational training seminars.

Comprehensive Exams Track
The comps track will be 36-credit hours of coursework. In addition to this, you must pass a comprehensive written exam of your knowledge about the core curriculum, and your area of specialization.
