A graduate assistantship is a great way to enhance your professional experience while also receiving funding and waiving your tuition and most of your fees.
The Department of Communication offers a number of assistantships.
In addition to the assistantships through our department, there are other assistantships available throughout the university that you may be eligible for. For more information about graduate assistantships, visit the Grad School website.
There are a limited number of departmental assistantships. But if these are all full, or do not meet your needs, you may wish to look for an assistantship elsewhere on campus. The university offers graduate assistantships in both academic and non-academic areas. All cover tuition and some (but not all) fees. All pay a stipend in the fall and spring. The amount of the stipend varies.
Academic graduate assistantships (GAs) are typically reserved for program majors, but sometimes openings are available. Non-academic GA positions are open to any graduate student on campus. Full Time Status Requirement
It is important to note that you must maintain full time status to keep your graduate assistantship. That means you must be enrolled in at least 9 semester hours of degree-applicable coursework in the fall or spring (6 semester hours in the summer if you have a summer GA). This excludes 300-level or lower coursework. Maintaining full time status in your final semesters can be somewhat challenging after you have completed all required coursework.
If for some reason you do not successfully complete a full time load of degree-applicable coursework during a previous semester, you will need to file an appeal to request continuation of their assistantship funding. Filing an appeal does not guarantee that funding will be continued.
