Admission

All students must be admitted to the Graduate School of the University before they can be admitted to the Communication Master of Science program. Multiple requirements govern admission to the Communication program. Higher scores in one category may offset lower scores in another.

Application Process

If you want to apply to our program, you should submit most application materials directly to the Graduate School before the appropriate deadline. If you are interested in a graduate assistantship, you will also need to complete the department's online assistantship application.  All materials, except the department's online GA application, should be submitted directly to the Graduate School.

Admission is available for both fall and spring terms. The University and the Department of Communication accept applications at any time.

Admission Requirements

Regular admission status will be granted by the Graduate School to applicants that meet the following criteria:

• Overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.  Or a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale for the last 60 semester hours of coursework.
• International applicants will also need to demonstrate English proficiency by providing one of the following:
  • A minimum Test of English as Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT) if you are from a country where English is not the primary language.
  • A minimum International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam score of 6.5.  (A comparison of TOEFL to ILETS tests scores is available at: http://www.ets.org/toefl/institutions/scores/compare/).
• UL Lafayette's institution code for submitting GRE and TOEFL scores is #6672. Because the evaluation process is lengthy, international students are advised to submit materials as early as possible.

Transferring Credits

You may apply a maximum of six credit hours (the equivalent of two classes) of appropriate transfer graduate credit toward your master's degree requirements, provided that our graduate program coordinator approves.

The transfer of graduate credit also requires the approval of the Dean of the Graduate School and is subject to all conditions listed in the University Graduate Catalog:

• You must be in regular admission status. (Conditionally admitted students must wait until they achieve regular status before applying for transfer credit to be considered.)
• You must have earned the credits at an accredited U.S. institution, which regularly grants advanced degrees.
• The credits must be no more than six years old.
