Journalism Major Checklist

Make sure you have all the courses you need for your journalism degree. If you have any questions about which classes you should take, talk to your advisor.

This checklist is for students who entered the journalism program during or after summer 2016. If you started earlier than summer 2016, visit the online catalog to find the bulletin that corresponds with the year you started the program.

Communication

  • English elective (3 credit hours/1 course). Choose from:

History

  • History elective (6 credit hours/2 courses). Choose from:

    • HIST 103 - Honors World Civiliations I
    • HIST 104 - Honors World Civilizations II
    • HIST 221 - The United States to 1877
    • HIST 222 - The United States Since 1877
    • HIST 223 - Honors the United States to 1877
    • HIST 224 - Honors the United States Since 1877
    • HIST 307 - History of Louisiana

Math

  • STAT 214 - Elementary Statistics
  • MATH 102 - Quantitative Reasoning OR both MATH 103 - Applied College Algebra Fundamentals and MATH 104 - Applied College Algebra Fundamentals Practicum
    • MATH 104 must be taken with MATH 103 but does not count toward the 124 total hours of degree credit required for this major.

Modern Languages

  • MODL 101 (choose from French, Spanish, or German)
  • MODL 102 (must choose the same language as you took for MODL 101)
  • MODL 201 (must be the same language as you took for MODL 101 and 102)
  • MODL 202  (must be the same language as you took for MODL 101, 102, and 201)

Political Science

  • POLS 110 - American National Government
  • POLS 317 - State and Local Government

Sciences

  • Science electives (9 credit hours/3 courses). For your degree, you'll be required to take three science electives. Two must be from the same science; at least one must be from both the biological sciences (BIOL, ENVS 150) and from the physical sciences (PHYS, CHEM, BIOL).

  • UNIV 100 - First Year Semin

Minor Courses & Other Electives

  • Minor courses (18 credit hours/6 courses). 6 credit hours must be at the 300 or 400 level.
    • Journalism students typically choose minors in English, history, modern languages, or political science. You can double-count some courses in these areas toward your core 124 hours required for the degree, or you can take more coursework than the basic requirement of 124 hours.
  • Humanities elective (6 credit hours/2 courses). Choose from ENGL, HIST, HUMN, MODL, or PHIL.
