Broadcasting 4-Year Plan

Follow this plan to stay on track and graduate on time. If you have any questions about which classes you should take, talk to your advisor.

This 4-year plan is for students who entered the broadcasting program during or after summer 2016. If you started earlier than summer 2016, visit the online catalog to find the 4-year plan that corresponds with the year you started the program.

Freshman Year

  • UNIV 100 - First Year Seminar
  • CMCN 170 - Media and Society
  • ENGL 101 - Introduction to Academic Writing
  • ENGL 102 - Writing and Research About Culture
  • MATH 102 - Quantitative Reasoning or both MATH 103 - Applied College Algebra Fundamentals and MATH 104 - Applied College Algebra Fundamentals Practicum
    • MATH 104 must be taken with MATH 103 but does not count toward the 124 total credit hours required for this degree.
  • MODL 101 (choose from French, Spanish, or German)
  • MODL 102 (must choose the same language as you took for MODL 101)
  • Science electives (6 credit hours/2 courses).
    • For your degree, you'll be required to take three science electives. Two must be from the same science; at least one must be from both the biological sciences (BIOL, ENVS 150) and from the physical sciences (PHYS, CHEM, BIOL).
  • History elective (3 credit hours/1 course). Choose from:
    • HIST 101 - World Civilizations I
    • HIST 102 - World Civilizations II
    • HIST 103 - Honors World Civiliations I
    • HIST 104 - Honors World Civilizations II
    • HIST 221 - The United States to 1877
    • HIST 222 - The United States Since 1877
    • HIST 223 - Honors the United States to 1877
    • HIST 224 - Honors the United States Since 1877
    • HIST 307 - History of Louisiana

Sophomore Year

  • CMCN 212 - Introductory Newswriting
  • CMCN 250 - Audio Production. There is a lab requirement that accompanies this course.
  • ENGL 352 - English Grammar and Usage
  • STAT 214 - Elementary Statistics
  • MODL 201 (must be the same language as you took for MODL 101 and 102)
  • MODL 202  (must be the same language as you took for MODL 101, 102, and 201)
  • English elective (3 credit hours/1 course). Choose from:
    • ENGL 201 - British Literature
    • ENGL 202 - British Literature II
    • ENGL 205 - American Literature I
    • ENGL 206 - American Literature II
    • ENGL 210 - Literary Genres
    • ENGL 211 - Thematic Approaches to Literature
    • ENGL 212 - Literature and Other Media
    • ENGL 215 - Honors British Literature
    • ENGL 216 - Honors American Literature
  • History elective (3 credit hours/1 course). Choose from:
    • HIST 101 - World Civilizations I

  • CMCN 360 - Television Production. There is a companion lab required for this course.
  • CMCN 365 - Single-Camera Production
  • CMCN 385 - Communication Law and Ethics
  • Behavioral Science elective. Choose a 300- or 400-level course in ANTH, ECON, GEOG, POLS, PSYC, SOCI, or CJUS.
  • Minor courses (6 credit hours/2 courses). It is recommended that you choose a minor in English, history, modern languages, or a single behavioral science.

Senior Year

  • CMCN 384 - Communication Theory
  • CMCN 386 - Communication Research
  • Communication elective (3 credit hours/1 course). Choose from:
    • CMCN 455 - TV News Production
    • CMCN 460 - TV/Film Producing and Directing
    • CMCN 465 - Documentary Filmmaking
  • CMCN 469 - Digital Media Convergence
  • CMCN 490 - Internship
  • PHIL 316 - Professional Ethics
  • MKTG 345 - Principles of Marketing or MGMT 360 - Management of Behavior and Organizations
  • Humanities elective (3 credit hours/1 course. Choose a course in ENGL, HIST, HUMN, MODL, or PHIL.
